Im buying a still digital camera (possibly Sony DSC-W220) would I beable to connect to adobe premier or other animation software to make stop motion animation? Ideally in a way that I wouldnt have to touch the camera itself when taking a frame and could just use the computer to capture what the screen sees

I seriously doubt it. The problem is that most digital cameras (even DSLR’s with a live view) can’t be used with stop motion software since they all go into a “generic hard drive” mode for uploading pics when plugged into a computer. That’s why stop motion programs can’t detect your camera; it’s not made to provide a live video feed when plugged into a computer.

I have a Sony DSC-W100 and it can’t do it. But if you really want to make sure, call Sony and ask.

Look for the Cameras and Camcorders section.

Keep in mind that webcams are the easiest to use with stop motion software since the whole point of them is to provide a live video feed while hooked up to a computer. Camcorders can be used as well, just make sure that whichever way it provides a Video Out signal (USB, Firewire, RCA Jack) that your computer has a proper port/jack for it. If not, you might need an adapter.
